In 2017, 30 Black Bears were euthanized in the Pike Peak Region, because they were attracted to trash and other edibles, often left outside at night. Place garbage outside ONLY on trash collections day (per city law) or use a bear proof container. Let's get 30 deaths down to zero-soon!

Our community has been doing a much better job of keeping trash contained until trash pick-up day and removing bird feeders. We have not had any recent bear sightings so this seems to be working.

I am a professional 50-year wildlife biologist. I applaud your efforts to protect the bears. I have found that because bears have a super-sensitive sense of smell that they really avoid places where mothballs have been sprinkled. I put them in and on my trash cans as our local bear (fourth generation) comes any time of day as he/she packs on the calories. I have a crab apple in the back yard that is loaded with fruit. Three nights ago the bear tried to rip into my cedar fence by the tree. I sprinkled mothballs along the fence and around my gate and under the tree. The bear hasn't been back since. Last fall I did the mothball trash can trick and though my neighbors got hit, I didn't. It works for me. Before I discovered this trick, in previous years my fence was torn, my shed was broken into and my trash was raided. My neighb0or behind me has a pear tree that the bear loved(s). This trick has kept her bear-free too.
